ASTRA: Leading the STRA Industry Across Australia and New Zealand
Your voice. Your advocate. Your industry partner.
ASTRA is the peak body representing the short term rental accommodation (STRA) sector across Australia and New Zealand. We drive change, influence policy, and ensure our members are heard at every level of government.
As a property manager, you are on the front line of STRA. ASTRA works to protect your interests by fighting for smarter policies, better regulation, and a stronger future for our industry. Join today and be part of a powerful collective shaping real change.
The STRA industry is under serious threat. Without unified, strategic advocacy, tighter regulations will continue to erode your listings, shrink your margins, and compromise your right to operate. Joining ASTRA isn’t just showing support - it’s safeguarding your business
Policy influence at all levels: ASTRA has secured a seat at the table during critical policy discussions locally, nationally and internationally. It has met with decision makers including Ministers, MP's and Local Government representatives across most states and territories in Australia and New Zealand.
National leadership: United Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) on a shared policy position, amplifying our industry's voice.
Victoria: Took a stand against the unconsulted 7.5% levy, mobilising industry support and securing a public commitment for its repeal post-2026 election.
New South Wales: Influenced the introduction of key measures like the registration portal and Code of Conduct; led to the first ever NSW Upper House debate dedicated to STRA. ASTRA regularly conducts research to support its advocacy efforts, most recently it commissioned independent research that looked at the economic and community impacts of short stay caps in Byron Shire, which has the strictest STRA regulation in Australia. This report formed the foundation of our advocacy efforts against night caps and was officially launched at NSW Parliament House in February 2025, marking a significant milestone for ASTRA and the STRA community.
Queensland: Key contributor to the city’s year long STRA taskforce, resulting in a more balanced regulatory approach.
Western Australia and South Australia: Playing an active role in STRA regulatory development and ongoing consultation.
New Zealand: Reduced the compliance burden on property managers through expert guidance on GST changes in partnership with Deloitte and OTAs.
International collaboration: Partnering with global leaders like VRMA (US), UKSTAA, and EHHA to share knowledge and advocate with strength.
