Welcome

ASTRA is expanding its operations into New Zealand and deeply values its members and supporters across the Tasman.

New Zealand ranks as one of the world’s greatest tourist and business travel destinations, with Australia maintaining its position in 2023 as the largest visitor market. Tourism New Zealand reports the number of visitor arrivals from Australia to New Zealand rose to over 1.2 million in the year to June 2023, accounting for almost half of all international visitor arrivals.

ASTRA will have an increased focus on promoting and protecting the Short-Term Rental Accommodation (STRA) sector in New Zealand to support the diverse range of hosts and visitors.

STRA Reform in New Zealand

The New Zealand Government is currently looking at regulatory options for the STRA sector, with a national framework anticipated relatively soon.

The Government is considering how it responds to concerns about un-hosted STRA providers operating as accommodation businesses without being subjected to the rules and regulations governing traditional operators.

At a local level, changes recently occurred in Christchurch as part of Christchurch City Council’s efforts to mitigate the impacts of short-term rentals in local communities, such as noise, traffic, and parking.

Changes to the Christchurch District Plan mean property owners will now be required to obtain a resource consent if they rent their properties to visitors for more than 60 days a year and / or there are more than eight guests. The decision establishes a precedent that councils have the authority to regulate short-term rental properties in accordance with their local district plans.

ASTRA’s advocacy is vitally important to understand forthcoming reforms and change to the STRA sector in New Zealand. To support us, become a member today or donate to ensure the sustainability of our industry.
