Media Release - A message from our CEO Mitchell Price regarding City of Adelaide’s plans to increase council rates for Short Term Accommodation by 15-20%!

The CEO of Australia and New Zealand Short Term Rental Association (ASTRA) is seriously concerned over the proposal by the Lord Mayor of Adelaide to tax short term rental accommodation owners hundreds of dollars in council rates. This tax, if implemented, would impact guests travelling for major events in Adelaide, such as the Adelaide Fringe Festival, Womad, Adelaide Festival, and others, potentially risking the city's upswing in tourism and the visitor economy. Additionally, short term rentals serve a vital role beyond leisure, accommodating various guests including patients, construction workers, healthcare professionals, and families in crisis, offering flexible and affordable lodging options. ASTRA proposes working with the City of Adelaide on a registration scheme and code of conduct, rather than implementing this tax, to support affordable housing and maintain the residential classification of these properties.
